I like how the ending was open-ended. After all he went through to kill the androids it wouldn't be surprising if he did retire. Iran buying the electric flies for the electric toad was definitely some dark humor. It seems interesting that they seemed to settle for the artificially they claimed to not want Yes, the ending was open-ended. "Seemed to settle" is the key. I guess it's up to the reader if Rick or Iran did or didn't settle. I feel like Rick would have eventuallu started craving a live animal again and got back into bounty hunting. (But I am cynical about him, I guess.) I have Philip Dick's "Four Novels of the 1960s" compilation. Have either of you read "Ubik" or "The Man in the High Castle"? Trying to pick which one to start next. I have "Four Novels of the 1960's" but haven't read any of the other stories

Or did he not trust her? I was disappointed in Rick when he later thinks he should have killed Rachael right after he slept with her. Maybe the author used that moment to show that Rick was becoming like the cruel bounty hunters he despised. I don't think it was that he didn't trust her but he was starting to feel sorry for the androids. It definitely seemed like throughout the story he was struggling with his feelings towards androids. On one hand he sympathized with them but tried to surpress it in order to "do his job" Yes I thought he was struggling with his feelings. Do you guys think that Rick is Anthony Greendowne or Joey?

What did you guys think of how they tried to get people to emigrate? It was like the 60's in how companies tried to talk people into moving from the noise of the cities into their own houses in the suburbs. This way, they'd buy more goods-more picnic tables, grills, shovels, everything!! Get yourself a new car! And, now, compare the stuff you have to your neighbor. Don't you deserve a new (fill in anything here)? You work just as hard or harder than that guy! Then the wives, if your husband really loved you, you'd have a bigger rind, more kids, a bigger house and nicer car. Now all the rich, downtown real estate was freed-up for businesses, factories could expand, new construction begins to build new houses, additions and pools. All these houses have new mortgage payments, interest and tax revenue. Building permit fees, gas fees, gas tax etc. If they all just stayed put, capitalism dies.

I think Anthony may have little pieces of Rick in him. Hopefully, not too much! Unlike Rick, he really seems in love with Cindi. Don't know much about Joey Vice, but he's an android, right?

I don't think he was either. Joey seemed like a playboy. I'm not sure if he was android or human. Anthony, in the way he's described, seems like a human sympathetic to androids-which is a reason Cindi loves him. Rick, on the other hand, seems like a hard-boiled gruff kind of guy.

There probably are some parallels to the 60s. Though in the story many humans died from the radioactive dust, so there may have been some real fear that the species would die out. Also, interesting catch on the "chicken head" reference in "What You Love".

Also, for some reason I think of the emigration thing when Janelle sings "I'm packing up my spacesuit, and I'm taking my s*** and moving to the moon". In fact, Sally Ride sounds like a soundtrack to Rick's life when I listen to it sometimes

This website is being a little wonky on my laptop right now. But, Rana, I am probably not as sympathetic to Rick as you are. (But I think the author intended Rick to be a complex character that you might end up liking or disliking). I agree that "Sally Ride" is an emigration song, but for me it fits the androids in this story more: who have all these rules, aren't free, and are on the run.

I'm not so much sympathetic to Rick as much as seeing him as a complex character. I can also see your take on "Sally Ride"
